1987 NAWS Pt Mugu Airshow Part 1 - Static Displays: Naval Air Weapons Station Pt Mugu hosted an airshow on October 18, 1987. A Boeing-Vertol HH-46A Sea Knight patrolled the airfield before the airshow began. A wide variety of airplanes were on static display, including many types that are no longer in service. A Lockheed C-130E Hercules fired up its turbo-prop engines in preparation for taking a load of parachutists aloft.
1987 NAWS Pt Mugu Airshow Part 2 - Opening Ceremonies: The airshow began with the take-offs of McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18A Hornets, Grumman F-14A Tomcats, a McDonnell-Douglas F-4S Phantom II, a Douglas RA-3B Skywarrior, and a Lockheed C-130 Hercules. They were followed by a North American P-51D Mustang, Curtis P-40N Kittyhawk, Vought F4U Corsair, North American T-28C Trojan, a pair of North American SNJ Texans, and racing Mustang Strega. After several flybys by the warbirds and fighters, parachutists jumped from the Hercules and were circled by the Holiday Inn Pitts Special Aerobatic Team.
1987 NAWS Pt Mugu Airshow Part 3: Grumman F-14A Tomcats, a McDonnell-Douglas F-4S Phantom II, a Douglas RA-3B Skywarrior, and a Lockheed C-130E recovered following the morning's opening ceremonies. A McDonnell-Douglas F-15A Eagle performed a flight demonstration, followed by a Bede BD-5J Microjet.
1987 NAWS Pt Mugu Airshow Part 4: A Grumman F-14A Tomcat performed a flight demonstration. Aerobatics were performed by the Holiday Inn Pitts Special Aerobatic Team and a solo monoplane (perhaps an Extra).
1987 NAWS Pt Mugu Airshow Part 5 - Blue Angels: The US Navy Blue Angels made their first appearance at Pt Mugu in their new McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18 Hornets. They performed their pre-flight ground show and taxied out, but low clouds prevented them from performing their aerobatic display.
